Welcome to the Department of Mechanical Engineering


The Department of Mechanical Engineering at Faculty of Engineering, KDU offers two bachelor’s degree programs namely BSc in Mechanical Engineering and BSc in Mechatronics Engineering. These four-year undergraduate programs aim to impart competencies on courses related to Design, Manufacturing, control systems and information technology so that the graduates are well equipped to become competent Mechanical and Mechatronic Engineers. To become competent Mechanical Engineers, students need to earn 135 GPA Credits and 16 NGPA credits for graduation while Engineering officer cadets in this stream require further 35 MGPA Credits. Mechatronics engineering students are required to earn 135 GPA credits and 19 NGPA credits for graduation. Officer Cadets require 35 MGPA Credits on top of the above for graduation.

The department is playing a dynamic role in the faculty mainly due to the presence of a highly qualified panel of lecturers with a wide range of expertise. Their academic background, teaching experiences, research capabilities and industrial exposure makes a significant contribution to the overall strength of the department. The department progresses well equipped laboratories. The department implements its well-designed curricula to the program of lectures and practical sessions. The department also organizes industrial visits and guest lectures providing further opportunities for enhancement and consolidation of student’s knowledge. The student intake is expanded by admitting the officers of the Tri-Services and day scholars both local and international. The department strives to maintain highest standards of education for the Officers from the tri-services, Officer Cadets and Day Scholars to be readily employable in the industry.

Mechatronics is an emerging field that blends mechanical engineering, electrical engineering and computer science to demonstrate the close integration of these disciplines in product design. The Mechatronic Engineering degree program offers both theory and practical work in the areas of Automation, Control, Robotics, Engineering design and applications. The acquired knowledge and skills gained will be useful to deal with the professional and career development goals of graduates in the future. The designed curriculum also offers a vast area of opportunities for future studies/ research as a graduate and even beyond.
