Entrepreneurship for Engineers: A Guest Lecture by Dr. Kalpana Ambepitiya

The Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) Student Chapter of KDU successfully organized an insightful guest lecture on Entrepreneurship for Engineers on the 17th March 2025 Faculty of Engineering. The session was conducted by Dr. Kalpana Ambepitiya, who holds a PhD. in Entrepreneurship from Huazhong University of Science and Technology, China, along with an MBA in Finance and an MPA from the University of Colombo. With expertise in marketing, journalism, advertising, television training and higher education, she shared her knowledge on entrepreneurship and its significance for engineers.

A key takeaway from the lecture was that entrepreneurship is about solving real-world problems, creating value and making a meaningful impact on the target market. Dr. Ambepitiya emphasized that as future engineers, our innovations must be driven by purpose and need, ensuring that technology serves a meaningful function in society. She also highlighted successful entrepreneurs use technical skills and problem-solving abilities to provide a strong foundation for entrepreneurship, making it an accessible and rewarding path for engineers.

In addition to discussing problem-solving and innovation, Dr. Ambepitiya introduced fundamental business models and strategies for launching a successful venture. She encouraged students to embrace entrepreneurship, explore opportunities beyond traditional engineering careers and take the first step toward creating their own businesses.

The session was both inspiring and informative, leaving attendees with a renewed perspective on how engineering and entrepreneurship go hand in hand.
