The members of the IMechE Students Chapter, General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University (KDU), conducted a successful Corporate Social Responsibility Initiative on 19th June 2025, aimed at supporting GCE Ordinary Level students in mathematics through a focused, interactive workshop.

The project took place at St. Sebastian’s Girls School in Moratuwa and was designed to provide academic support in key mathematical areas essential for O/L success. The initiative was organized by Day Scholar R.S. Lokubalasuriya and Day Scholar E.P. Sandinu, with coordination by Capt. RS Ginige and Capt. MBTM Balagalla. Their combined efforts ensured a well-structured, impactful program.

The day’s activities commenced at 1:00 PM with an introduction to General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University and its IMechE Student Chapter, delivered by Chapter President Day Scholar Janidu Balasuriya and Secretary Day Scholar Manishi Silva. Their address offered students a concise overview of the university, while also introducing the IMechE Student Chapter’s objectives.

The workshop featured two instructional sessions. The first session, conducted by Day Scholar Nadeesha Divyanjalee, focused on breaking down core mathematical theory using simplified examples and practical tips for better understanding. After a short recess to refresh and re-energize students, the second session was led by Day Scholar Gamith Ariyarathna, who expanded on problem-solving techniques and incorporated past paper discussions to highlight common exam patterns.

Interactive quizzes added a fun and competitive element to the sessions, encouraging students to actively participate and freely clarify their doubts. To further boost enthusiasm, top-performing students were recognized with prizes, making the learning experience both engaging and rewarding.

The event concluded at 4.30 pm with the vote of thanks delivered by Day Scholar Janidu Balasuriya. He extended sincere appreciation to the principal and staff of St. Sebastian’s Girls School for their hospitality and support, and thanked all attendees for their active involvement. The CSR project reflected the IMechE Chapter’s continued commitment to educational outreach and community development.
