Ms. Thamalu Kumarasinghe Triumphs at IMechE South Asian Regional Speak Out for Engineers Competition!

A moment of immense pride for the Institution of Mechanical Engineers Student Chapter of General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University and the Department of Mechanical Engineering! Ms. Thamalu Kumarasinghe, former Educational Chair of IMechE-KDU, has secured first place in the South Asian Regional Speak Out for Engineering (SOFE) competition, held on 08th February 2025, at the Studio Mavisuru at the Institute of Engineers, Sri Lanka. Competing against top contenders from India, Bangladesh and Nepal, she showcased her exceptional oratory skills and engineering knowledge setting a benchmark for aspiring engineers.

She will represent South Asian Region at the Global SOFE Competition which is scheduled to be held in Turkey in April 2025. This is not just a personal achievement but a testament to the strength of young engineers emerging from KDU and the dedication of IMechE-KDU in fostering talent amongst its members.

Ms. Thamalu’s speech titled, “Powering Up The Tomorrow We Envision” revolved around the need for sustainability, highlighting the necessity of rethinking our mindset and fostering innovation for a greener future. She placed solar power at the heart of her discussion, illustrating how harnessing the sun’s energy could revolutionize industries, economies and everyday life.

One of the most impactful moments of her speech was when she concluded with these powerful words: “The tomorrow we envision is powered by innovation. The tomorrow we envision comes with responsibility. The tomorrow we envision is about making wise decisions.” These words resonated deeply with the audience, reinforcing the essence of forward-thinking engineering.
