In today’s fast-paced digital era, version control and collaborative coding have become indispensable skills for developers and engineers. To empower undergraduates with this knowledge, The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) On Campus KDU, in collaboration with Career Fair 2025, organized an insightful hands-on workshop titled “Git in Action”. The session took place on 27th August 2025 at the Faculty of Engineering, KDU. It was conducted by Mr. Suvin Nimnaka, GitHub Campus Expert and Senior Software Engineer at WSO2. On behalf of Career Fair 2025, the Chairman, Mr. Sahan Premachandra, welcomed the attendees to the event. The session was conducted smoothly and successfully, providing participants with a valuable and engaging learning experience.
The workshop aimed to demystify the core concepts of Git and GitHub, enabling participants to efficiently manage their code, track changes, and collaborate seamlessly on projects. Students were introduced to the fundamentals of version control, repository creation, branching strategies, and collaborative workflows that form the backbone of modern software development.
Mr. Nimnaka guided attendees through practical demonstration, showing how to commit changes, resolve conflicts, and contribute to shared repositories. Participants were also given valuable insights into professional workflows used in the tech industry, including open source contributions, pull requests, and code reviews.
A highlight of the session was the live hands-on exercises, where students had the chance to apply commands in real time and experience collaborative problem-solving. Beyond the technicalities, Mr. Nimnaka emphasized the importance of teamwork, project organization, and leveraging GitHub as a platform for showcasing individual and group projects.
To make the session even more engaging, Mr. Nimnaka rewarded active participants with gifts. Students who answered questions received notebooks, while a special teddy was awarded to one student who gave a brief of the event. Additionally, all participants were treated to GitHub themed goodies including stickers, a handy cheat code sheet, and a small booklet to support their learning journey.
As a token of appreciation, Mr. Suvin Nimnaka was honered by the IET On Campus KDU Advisor. On behalf of IET On Campus KDU, the “Git in Action” project coordinator, Ms. Veenavee Samarasinghe, delivered the Vote of Thanks, appreciating the guest speaker, lectures, participants, and all those who contributed to the success of the workshop.
The event brought together enthusiastic participation from students across the Faculty of Engineering, Faculty of Computing, and other disciplines. The interactive environment encouraged discussions, knowledge sharing, and confidence-building as attendees engaged with real-world version control practices.
The Git in Action workshop was a resounding success, leaving participants inspired to “Learn, Commit, and Collaborate Like a Pro.” As industries continue to evolve with team-driven coding practices, initiatives like these prepare undergraduates to step confidently into the world of collaborative software development.
