As part of their 'Industrial visits' module, Intake 40 students of the Electrical and Electronic Engineering degree program visited the Lakvijaya Power Station on June 11th, 2025. The group, comprising more than 50 participants including students, academic, and non-academic staff members, explored the facility.

Located in Norochcholai, the Lakvijaya Power Station is Sri Lanka’s largest coal-fired power plant and plays a vital role in meeting the country's electricity demand. Operated by the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB), the facility consists of three coal-fired generating units, each with a capacity of 300 MW, contributing a total of 900 MW to the national grid.

During the visit, Operation Engineer, Mr DS Saputhanthri provided an in-depth overview of the power station’s operations. The students had the opportunity to observe large-scale thermal generation processes and gain practical insights into grid integration and power plant maintenance. The visit greatly enriched their academic learning by exposing them to real-world applications of power systems and energy engineering.
