The IEEE Power and Energy Society of KDU had their annual Field Visit for the year 2024, conducted to the Upper Kotmale Power Station on 02nd of March 2024. The event was graced by 90+ participants, where Electrical and Electronic (EE) Engineering students of the intakes 38, 39 and 40 took part for the visit. The Head of Department Electrical, Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering, Capt (L) RT Hettiarachchi USP was also present for the event, with several Academic and non-academic staff of the department.
The Upper Kotmale Power station is completely owned by the Ceylon Electricity Board and was put into commercial operation in 2012. It consists of two 75MW generators (Total capacity of 150MW), connected to vertical-axis Francis type turbines, with an annual generation of 409GWh. It is a run-off river hydropower plant, where the entire Power House is situated underground. Generated output voltage at 13.8kV is being stepped up to 220kV through bank of 3 Single phase transformers inside the Power House. This generated power is then transmitted through the 220kV line to the Kotmale Switch yard.
The students who participated for the visit, gained new insights regarding Hydro Electricity Generation and its related aspects.
