The Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) Student Chapter of General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University successfully hosted a panel discussion, “Industry Speaks: Are You Listening?” on 17 July 2025. This initiative aimed to bridge the gap between university learning and industry by providing an opportunity for undergraduates to interact with professionals from the field.
The session featured three guest speakers from varied engineering backgrounds:
- Mr. Kavindha Ratwatte, Assistant Manager at Softmatter, a subsidiary of MAS Holdings
- Eng. Kavindu Fernando, Mechanical Engineer at LTL Holdings
- Mr. Lakmal Isuru, Director of DeMEP Group and CEO of 365 Future Energy
Each speaker shared their unique journey, beginning with life as a student and continuing into their professional careers. They candidly discussed the challenges they faced and how they overcame them through hands-on experience, teamwork, and perseverance.
Mr. Kavindha Ratwatte described his transition into the dynamic world of MAS, where innovation and fast-paced projects are part of everyday life. Eng. Kavindu Fernando shed light on the role mechanical engineers play in the power and energy sector. Mr. Lakmal Isuru shared his insights and encouraged students to adopt a problem-solving and innovative mindset practical.
Throughout the session, all three speakers emphasized the importance of soft skills such as communication, leadership, and adaptability. They also pointed out how internships, extracurricular involvement, and a proactive attitude can significantly shape a student’s career path. The programme concluded with an engaging Q&A session.
The event provided a refreshing and realistic perspective on life after university. It served as a reminder that the road ahead will be shaped not just by technical knowledge but also by mindset, resilience, and continuous learning.
