The Student Chapter of the Royal Aeronautical Society of KDU (RAeS KDU) hosted an insightful and engaging Remote Control (RC) Aircraft Training Workshop, led by Mr. Nalin De Alwis, a proficient expert in model aviation, RC aircraft systems and an aviation enthusiast. The workshop took place on the 17th of January 2025 and witnessed enthusiastic participation from students eager to explore the world of RC aircraft.
An Introduction to RC Aircraft
Mr. De Alwis brought in a diverse range of remote controlled aircraft models of various scales and genres, offering students a rare chance to observe and interact with them up close. The session began with a comprehensive explanation of the theoretical principles like the aerodynamics of RC aircraft, radio communication and control mechanisms as well as flight stability and surface control. Students were also introduced to the structural and functional components of various types of aircraft, learning how control surfaces, electronics, and remote control systems come together to create fully functional miniature flying machines.
Bridging Theory with Practicals
The second segment of the workshop focused on the practical aspects of RC aircraft operation, with Mr. De Alwis demonstrating control techniques and maneuvering styles. He highlighted the importance of precision, environmental awareness, and safety practices in handling RC planes.
A particularly eye opening part of the session was the discussion on the challenges faced by RC aircraft hobbyists in Sri Lanka and also as to ‘how established this hobby already is’ in countries like the United States. He further encouraged taking up flying RC aircraft as a hobby.
A Soaring Success
The workshop was met with great enthusiasm from all participants, many of whom expressed a keen interest in exploring RC aircraft design and piloting. The Remote Control Aircraft Training Workshop not only enriched students’ technical knowledge but also inculcated a deeper appreciation and love for the art of flying RC aircraft within the students.
