Lazarus'25, the largest space science and astronomy event of SEDS KDU, successfully took place on the 8th and 9th of March at KDU Southern Campus, Sooriyawewa. The event attracted about 200 participants, brought together professionals, students, and space enthusiasts from KDU and SEDS Sri Lanka. Lazarus'25 provided an atmosphere for education, cooperation, and creativity with its innovative workshops, engaging seminars. The experience was further enhanced by the participation of SEDS SL.
Key Highlights of Lazarus'25
1. Astronomical Observation Nights
Participants had the opportunity to gaze at celestial wonders through high-powered telescopes and gain insights from expert astronomers. This year’s observation sessions included deep-space exploration and planetary studies, providing a mesmerizing experience for all attendees.
2. Hands-on Workshops & Challenges
Lazarus’25 featured a range of technical workshops and challenges designed to enhance skills and spark curiosity. Key events included:
- Star Map Reading – Participants learned how to navigate the night sky with precision. This was conducted by a past member of SEDS KDU Miss. Milni Wijebandara.
- Night Sky Observation Session – Attendees observed celestial bodies through advanced telescopes. The telescopes were handled by the SEDS SL team. Also this session was mainly conducted by the enthusiasts from SEDS SL.
- Astronomy Quiz Night – A thrilling competition that tested knowledge on space and astronomy. This enhanced the knowledge of participants about the space and its wonders.
- Glider Competition – Participants designed and launched their own aerodynamic gliders. Here the best glider was selected by considering the flight time of each an every glider.
- Lecture on Black Holes – This lecture was about what is a black hole, the theories associated with black holes. This gained interesting turn to the event.
- Egg Drop Challenge – This was a test of engineering skills in designing a safe landing system for an egg.
- Talent Show Related to Space – A creative showcase of space-themed performances where participants performed creative form of dramas, dances & songs.
- Water Rocket Challenge – A hands-on activity where participants built and launched water-powered rockets. The winner was declared by the farthest projectile range of the rocket.
3. An introduction to SEDS SL
The representatives from SEDS Sri Lanka presented an introduction about the SEDS Earth & SEDS SL, the functionality and the projects that have been taken place and currently undergoing. The team appraised the dedication and success displayed by SEDS KDU as a chapeter.
A Resounding Success
Lazarus'25 was more than just an event it was a celebration of human curiosity and the relentless pursuit of knowledge beyond our planet. Attendees left inspired, with new knowledge, skills, and connections that will help shape the future of space exploration.
It must be stated that LAZARUS’25 would not be a successful event if not to the support and team work provided by the organizing committee behind this huge event. So, a huge thanks goes to them as well.
With the overwhelming success of Lazarus’25, anticipation is already building for next year’s edition. Stay tuned for more exciting space adventures ahead!
