As part of their 'Industrial visits' module, Intake 39 students of the Electrical and Electronic Engineering degree program visited the Kelanithissa Combined Cycle Power Station on April 9th, 2024. The group, comprising more than 35 participants including students, academic, and non-academic staff members, explored the facility.
Situated in the central Colombo area, the Kelanithissa Combined Cycle Power Station stands as one of the nation's primary thermal power generation facilities. Operated by the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB), this plant boasts the capability to utilize both naphtha, a by-product of petroleum refining, and Diesel oil as alternative fuels. The power station's infrastructure includes a 110 MW Gas Turbine and a 55 MW Steam Turbine, combined to yield a total electricity generation capacity of 165 MW.
During the visit, the shift engineer provided comprehensive insights into the plant's operations and systems, elucidating various aspects for the benefit of the students.
