A New Era of Bioengineering Research

On the 15th of March 2023, students from the Faculty of Engineering (FOE) at the General Sir John Kothalawala Defence University had the privilege to attend a guest lecture by Dr. Sachira Kuruppu, a renowned expert in the field of biomedical engineering. The event was held from 3 pm to 4 pm, and it targeted BM, MC, and ME students.

Dr. Kuruppu"'"s lecture focused on the operation of the gastrointestinal system, underpinned by bioelectrical activity. The talk covered a range of topics, including novel applications of signal processing, image processing, and continuum mechanics to investigate the relationship between gastrointestinal bioelectrical activity and contractions. Dr. Kuruppu also delved into the relationship between the gastrointestinal system and contractions, and highlighted bioelectrical and contractile biomarkers for the disordered case of mesenteric ischemia.

The lecture aimed to educate students about the cutting-edge research in gastrointestinal electrophysiology. Dr. Kuruppu emphasized the importance of this research in developing new therapies for gastrointestinal disorders. The lecture also aimed to give students a better understanding of how signal processing, image processing, and continuum mechanics are utilized in bioengineering research. These tools are critical in developing new diagnostic techniques and treatments for gastrointestinal disorders.

The audience was engaged throughout the talk, and many students had the opportunity to ask questions at the end of the lecture. Dr. Kuruppu"'"s expertise and enthusiasm were evident throughout the talk, and students were inspired by the research opportunities in the field of biomedical engineering. In conclusion, Dr. Sachira Kuruppu"'"s lecture on gastrointestinal electrophysiology was a valuable opportunity for FOE students to learn about cutting-edge research in the field of bioengineering. The lecture highlighted the importance of signal processing, image processing, and continuum mechanics in developing new diagnostic and therapeutic techniques for gastrointestinal disorders. It was an excellent opportunity for students to interact with a renowned expert in the field and learn about the exciting research opportunities available in biomedical engineering.
