On 11th September 2023, a field visit was organized by the Department of Mechanical Engineering of General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University to the School of Artillery, MINNERIYA to get the practical experience after the ballistics engineering module offered by DoME. School of Artillery is the premier training institute of the Regiment of Artillery of the Sri Lanka Army. The School of Artillery provides training to all ranks of the Regiment of Artillery, from Gunner to Officer. The School of Artillery also provides training on a variety of artillery weapons and systems, including field guns, howitzers, multiple rocket launchers, and air defense guns. In addition to its primary role of training artillery personnel, the School of Artillery also conducts research and development on artillery weapons and systems. Upon arrival at the School of Artillery, our officer cadets were warmly welcomed by Commandant, Col NC Lokugalappaththi IG and officers and staffs of the School of Artilley, MINNERIYA. The visit began with an insightful briefing on the history and significance of artillery in warfare, setting the stage for the day"'"s activities. The highlight of the visit was a demonstration of the firing procedure of artillery weapons. Our students had the opportunity to witness the precision and coordination required in this critical aspect of artillery operations. They observed the safety protocols, loading techniques, and the teamwork involved in firing these powerful weapons. As our group toured the artillery workshops, they were able to observe the various components of artillery guns, gaining valuable insights into their intricate designs. This field visit left an indelible mark on our Mechanical Engineering students, offering them a unique and tangible connection to the world of artillery technology. It bridged the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application, enhancing their appreciation of mechanical engineering principles in real-world scenario Under the esteemed guidance of the Head of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Capt (E) DS Bogahawatte, we have been fortunate to receive mentorship from a distinguished academic leader. We express deep gratitude to Deputy Vice Chancellor, Brigadier DCA Wickramasinghe USP USACGSC, and the Army Headquarters for their unwavering support in granting approvals, emphasizing the importance of our educational endeavor and their commitment to fostering future experts in ballistics engineering. We cannot overstate our gratitude to the Artillery School for their pivotal role in orchestrating this field visit. Their logistical efforts and dedication to our education have made this experience not only possible but also seamless. The arrangements they have put in place, from facilitating access to cutting-edge facilities to coordinating with experts in the field, have greatly enriched our learning experience. This visit would not have been as comprehensive or impactful without their support.
