"Revving Up the Future of Engineering: KDU"'"s Formula Student Team Takes on the Global Stage"

Formula Student is a global engineering competition that challenges university students to design, build and race a single-seat race car. The competition provides a platform for students to showcase their engineering skills and compete against other universities from around the world. On the 19th of April 2023, an awareness session of the Formula Student Team of KDU was conducted by the FS-Team of General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University.

The event was graced by two distinguished guests, KDU lecturer Surath Gajanayake and Prabath Dissanayake. The event was held at the Faculty of Engineering from 2:30 pm to 4:45 pm. The session aimed to introduce participants to the Formula Student competition, and its benefits, and provide an update on the progress of the work so far.

The Formula Student competition is an excellent opportunity for students to apply their theoretical knowledge in a practical setting. The competition requires students to work in teams, allowing them to develop critical skills such as teamwork, communication, and leadership. By joining the Formula Student team, students can gain valuable experience and make valuable connections with industry professionals.

During the session, the FS-Team of General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University showcased their progress in designing and building a single-seat race car for the Formula Student competition. They also handed over new tasks to prospective members of the team, encouraging them to contribute to the project"'"s success.

Overall, the awareness session of the Formula Student Team of KDU was a great success. It provided participants with valuable information about the Formula Student competition, its benefits, and the opportunity to join a team of talented and passionate individuals. We hope that this event will inspire more students to take part in this competition and contribute to the advancement of the field of engineering.

The Department of Mechanical Engineering at the Faculty of Engineering, KDU offers two bachelor’s degree programmes, namely, BScEngHons in Mechanical Engineering and BScEngHons in Mechatronic Engineering. These four-year undergraduate programmes aim to impart competencies in courses related to Design, Manufacturing, Control Systems, and Information Technology in order to produce graduates who are well equipped to become competent Mechanical and Mechatronic Engineers.The department is playing a dynamic role in the faculty. The presence of qualified panel of lecturers with a wide range of expertise, their academic background, teaching experiences, research capabilities, and industrial exposure make a significant contribution to the overall strength of the department. The department possesses well-equipped laboratories and implements its well-designed curricula in lectures and practical sessions. The department also organises industrial visits and guest lectures, providing further opportunities for the enhancement and consolidation of students’ knowledge. The student intake is expanded by admitting Officers of the Tri-Services and Day Scholars, both local and international.
