On the 14th of June 2024, mechanical & mechatronics undergraduates of Intake 40 embarked on a transformative industrial visit to Sunshine Consumer Lanka Limited. The visit focused on the production of jellies, wafers, candy, and chocolate, preceded by a comprehensive lecture on the company’s history and the engineering behind its machinery.
Before the visit, students attended a lecture detailing Sunshine Consumer Lanka Limited's evolution into a leading confectionery manufacturer. The session emphasized the company’s commitment to quality and the engineering principles essential for their sophisticated production processes, including stringent hygiene standards.
The tour showcased the meticulous production lines, starting with jelly production where automated machines ensured precise mixing, moulding, and packaging. Next, students witnessed the precise baking and filling of wafer products and the intricate processes involved in candy and chocolate production, highlighting the fusion of art and science.
Emphasis was placed on sterile conditions maintained through advanced sterilization equipment and strict hygiene protocols. The importance of regular maintenance schedules for machinery to ensure optimal performance and longevity was also underscored.
The visit left a lasting impression on the students, deepening their understanding of mechanical engineering applications in food manufacturing.
