The Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) stands as a professional organization established in the United Kingdom in 1847, dedicated to the advancement of mechanical engineering. Its primary mission encompasses the promotion of the mechanical engineering profession and the continual enhancement of knowledge and skills among its members. IMechE offers a comprehensive array of services and resources, including professional development, networking opportunities, and technical publications, to support the ongoing growth and development of mechanical engineers throughout their careers.

On the 17th of January 2024, at 3:00 p.m., the Annual General Meeting of the IMechE Student Chapter of KDU for the academic year 2024/2025 convened at the FGS Auditorium, KDU. The event was graced by the esteemed presence of Eng. Lal Weerasinghe, Chairman of IMechE Sri Lanka Group, and Eng. Chanaka Wanniarachchi, Chairman of the Southern Asia Regional Committee of IMechE, serving as the Chief Guest and Guest of Honor, respectively.

In attendance were the Dean Faculty of Engineering, Dean Faculty of Defence & strategic studies, Heads of Departments of the Faculty of Engineering, along with the Academic Staff of Mechanical Engineering. Over fifty undergraduates from intakes 38, 39, and 40 witnessed the proceedings. The inauguration of the meeting involved the traditional lighting of the oil lamp, the recitation of the KDU anthem, and a moment of silence for fallen war heroes.

Mrs. HDI Piyumini delivered the welcome speech, after which Dr. Lal Weerasinghe shared insightful words of wisdom. Eng. Chanaka Wanniarachchi delivered the Keynote Speech, shedding light on the progressions within IMechE. The event was further enhanced by a colourful musical performance by The Beige Band.

Past President Sandaru Gamage provided an overview of the student chapter's activities for 2023/24, followed by the presentation of minutes by Past Secretary M. Vidurka. The highlight of the day was the Installation of the new office, accompanied by a gracious speech from the newly appointed president, S. Leninnath.

Recognition was given to past committee members of the previous office for their valuable contributions to society. Prof. Thushara Weerawardhena, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, distributed letters of commendation, assisted by Captain Dinuk Bogahawatta, Head of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, and the newly appointed President, S. Leninnath.

Mr. M. Madawalage, the newly appointed Secretary, delivered the vote of thanks, and the gathering concluded with the National Anthem.
