On June 19th, 2025, members of the IMechE Students Chapter of General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University (KDU) conducted a successful Corporate Social Responsibility Initiative, aimed at supporting GCE Ordinary Level students in mathematics through a focused, interactive workshop.

The project took place at St. Sebastian’s Girls School in Moratuwa and was designed to provide academic reinforcement in key mathematical areas essential for O/L success. The initiative was organized by D/S R.S. Lokubalasuriya and D/S E.P. Sandinu, with coordination by Capt. RS Ginige and Capt. MBTM Balagalla. Their combined efforts ensured a well-structured, impactful program.

The day’s activities officially commenced at 1:00 PM with an introduction to General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University and its IMechE Student Chapter, delivered by Chapter President D/S Janidu Balasuriya and Secretary D/S Manishi Silva. Their address offered students a concise overview of the university’s academic ethos and values, while also introducing the IMechE Student Chapter’s objectives. In doing so, the speakers not only contextualized the presence of the visiting team but also set a professional and purposeful tone for the sessions that followed.

The workshop featured two instructional sessions. The first session, conducted by D/S Nadeesha Divyanjalee, focused on breaking down core mathematical theory using simplified examples and practical tips for better understanding. After a short recess to refresh and re-energize students, the second session was led by D/S Gamith Ariyarathna, who expanded on advanced problem-solving techniques and incorporated past paper discussions to highlight common exam patterns.

Interactive quizzes added a fun and competitive edge to the sessions, encouraging active participation. Small prizes were awarded to top-performing students, motivating learners and reinforcing key concepts in a rewarding manner.

The workshop’s overall success was attributed to both the conductors' strong subject knowledge and the students' enthusiasm. The learning environment remained collaborative, inclusive, and highly responsive, allowing students to freely engage with the material and clarify doubts.

Concluding at 4:30 PM, the event ended with a heartfelt vote of thanks delivered by D/S Janidu Balasuriya. He extended sincere appreciation to the principal and staff of St. Sebastian’s Girls School for their hospitality and support, and thanked all attendees for their active involvement. The CSR project reflected the IMechE Chapter’s continued commitment to educational outreach and community development.
