Visit to Colombo Dockyard PLC and SLNS Vijayabahu

The undergraduates of BSc Eng (Hons) in Marine Engineering and BSc Eng (Hons) in Naval Architecture & Marine Engineering of Intake 39 and 40 visited Colombo Dockyard PLC (CDL) on 14th February 2024. This excursion marked a pivotal moment in their academic pursuits, offering invaluable insights into the sophisticated and competitive world of marine engineering and shipbuilding.

During the visit in CDL the undergraduates got opportunity to explore the workmanship and processes involved in Ship design and construction, Docking and slipping of vessels, Marine auxiliary machinery repairing, Marine diesel engine repairing which are undertaken with skilled workforce and modern techniques. 

One of the highlights of the visit was the students were afforded a rare opportunity to explore SLNS Vijayabahu, one of the Advanced Offshore Patrol Vessel possessed by Sri Lanka Navy, which is undergoing the docking repairs at CDL. During that, the undergraduates witness the practical exposure on ship’s propulsion system, power distribution system, auxiliary machinery arrangement, ship structure with strengthening members and also the repairs undertaken of same.

The visit of CDL and SLNS Vijayabahu had been more than just a tour; it had been a transformative experience that would shape their academic and professional endeavours for years to come. In conclusion, the excursion to CDL and SLNS Vijayabahu stood as a testament for the undergraduates to the enduring spirit of exploration and discovery that defines the field of marine engineering.
