On 21st September 2023, a field visit was organized by the Department of Mechanical Engineering of General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University to Michelin Lanka (Pvt) Ltd – Central Engineering Division for Intake 39 Mechanical and Mechatronic engineering undergraduates.
Michelin Lanka (Pvt) Ltd specializes in off-road tires, wheels, rubber tracks and track systems for the material handling, construction, agriculture and powersports industries. Their high-performance products are specifically designed to meet the unique mobility needs of each application in the OTR vehicle market.
Before the acquisition from Michelin, Michelin Lanka (Pvt) Ltd was earlier known as Camso Loadstar (Pvt) Ltd. Camso has been designing, manufacturing and marketing OTR mobility solutions since 1982. Camso is a market leader in rubber tracks for farm equipment and snowmobiles, and in solid and bias tires for material handling equipment. It also ranks among the top three players in the construction market, in track and tire solutions for small heavy equipment. Leveraging its technological leadership in tracks and related systems, its competitive manufacturing footprint, particularly in Sri Lanka, and strong customer awareness of its CAMSO and SOLIDEAL brands.
Upon arrival, Capt LLA De Silva (retd) – Director Engineering provided a short presentation to introduce the company and its standards. The undergraduates were able to visit automation, motor winding, Machining and hydraulic sections during the visit. Specially in the machining section the undergraduates were able to witness the working mechanisms of CNC machines and wire cut machines. The demonstration in the RCM (Reliability Centered Maintenance) section and the faro arm provided undergraduates with valuable insights into the workings of a modern technology. The visit was an excellent opportunity for the students to apply their theoretical knowledge to a real-world scenario and gain practical experience in the field.
