Designing an Alternative Battery Charging Method for Inshore Patrol Craft in Kandawala Lake Using Sola Power

Draining battery onboard IPC when the craft is not operating is a large problem faced by the IPC in Kandawala Lake. The Same problem is faced by most of the IPCs in Sri Lanka Navy. Also it become a major limiting factor of operational hours of IPCs in sea. We have pointed out the main reasons for the battery draining and a sustainable solution has been given through solar power which is a renewable enrgy. Sri lanka as a country near equator we have the advantage of getting solar irradiation for entire year to a sufficient extent withot too much of disturbances. Mathematical calculations are done to find the power requirement that should be fulfilled by the sloar panel with battery efficiency also taking into account. When sizing the solar panels practical PV potential value has been used that was obtained by Solagris. Then charging controller has been done for finding the amperage capacity. Specific facts have been elaborated when mounting solar panels onboard that is different when comes to the ground applications.
