On the 27th of May 2023, an industrial visit to the Norochcholai Lakvijaya Power Plant was organized by the Institute of Marine Engineering Science and Technology (IMarEST) for the enthusiastic undergraduate students of Marine Engineering and Mechanical Engineering of General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University and also marine engineering undergraduates and students from various Universities and Higher Educational Institutes. This educational excursion provided a unique opportunity for the students to gain valuable insights into the operations of Sri Lanka"'"s largest power generation facility.
They had the privilege of witnessing the inner workings of massive turbines, generators, and other mechanical components responsible for producing electricity. The visit not only enhanced their understanding of theoretical concepts but also provided practical insights into the design and maintenance of such complex systems. Also, the undergraduates were fascinated by the power plant"'"s connection to the maritime industry. They were able to witness how seawater is used in the cooling systems, gaining firsthand knowledge of the challenges posed by corrosion and maintenance in a marine environment. This experience bridged the gap between their academic studies and the real-world applications they will encounter in their future careers.
The visit provided Marine and Mechanical Engineering undergraduates with a transformative learning experience. Through this initiative, the students gained practical knowledge, expanded their industry networks, and developed a greater appreciation for the intricacies of power generation. This visit exemplified the commitment of IMarEST to nurturing future engineering professionals and fostering excellence in the field of marine and mechanical engineering.
