Introduction:
In a groundbreaking initiative aimed at saving fuel and ensuring efficient patient transportation, a team of dedicated lecturers and undergraduates, under the supervision of Commodore(E) MCP Dissanayake, USP, psc, Head of the Department of the Department of Marine Engineering of General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University, successfully made their first attempt at introducing E-Rickshaws. These environmentally-friendly vehicles are set to revolutionize transportation systems while contributing to the overall well-being of the country. This article highlights the significance of the project and the positive impact it brings to fuel conservation and patient transportation.

Fuel Conservation and Environmental Sustainability:
The escalating fuel consumption rates have posed a significant challenge to many countries. In this context, the introduction of E-Rickshaws emerges as a promising solution to address this concern. E-Rickshaws are electric vehicles powered by rechargeable batteries which is powered by solar powered battery chargers, emitting zero harmful emissions. By replacing conventional fuel-powered vehicles, these electric rickshaws help reduce carbon footprints and combat air pollution, promoting a cleaner and greener environment.

Efficient Patient Transportation to University Hospital KDU:
One of the notable applications of E-Rickshaws lies in the efficient transportation of patients to the University Hospital KDU located in Werahera. With the support of Commodore MCP Dissanayake and his team, the E-Rickshaw project aims to streamline the transportation process for incoming patients. The university"'"s proximity to the hospital makes it an ideal location for implementing this innovative solution, providing a convenient and eco-friendly mode of transportation for patients in need.

Benefits and Features of E-Rickshaws:

  • Reduced Fuel Consumption: The switch from fuel-powered vehicles to E-Rickshaws significantly reduces fuel consumption, resulting in substantial cost savings and decreased dependence on fossil fuels.
  • Environmental Friendliness: E-Rickshaws produce zero emissions, ensuring a cleaner environment and improved air quality, especially in densely populated areas like Werahera.
  • Cost-Effectiveness: Operating and maintenance costs of E-Rickshaws are considerably lower where it took only Rs. 2.50 per km to run compared to conventional vehicles, making them a financially viable option.
  • Noise Reduction: E-Rickshaws operate silently, minimizing noise pollution and enhancing the overall tranquility of the surroundings.

Conclusion:
The successful implementation of the E-Rickshaw project led by the lecturers and undergraduates, under the guidance of Commodore MCP Dissanayake, USP, psc and the Vice Chancellor of the University, Major General Milinda Peiris, RWP, RSP, VSV, USP, ndc, psc, MPhil (Ind), signifies a significant milestone in fuel conservation and patient transportation. By introducing these electric vehicles, the team has not only contributed to the reduction of fuel consumption but also created a more sustainable and environmentally-friendly mode of transportation for patients. This initiative serves as an inspiration for other institutions and communities to adopt innovative solutions that prioritize both environmental sustainability and the well-being of individuals.
