The Department of Marine Engineering had the privilege of participating in an insightful session titled “The Smart Ship Engineer, Empowering Tomorrow’s Marine Engineer for a Connected, Safe and Greener World” held on Thursday, 7th August 2025, from 17:30 to 19:00 hrs at the Marine House.

The distinguished speaker for this event was Capt. S.B.S. Lakmal, a seasoned Master Mariner, Auditor, and the Chief Operating Officer of Ceyline Shipping. With his vast expertise and industry perspective, Capt. Lakmal shed light on the evolving role of marine engineers in an era driven by smart technologies, sustainable practices, and global connectivity.

The session emphasized the importance of adopting digital solutions, enhancing safety standards, and integrating environmentally responsible practices in modern shipping operations. It also encouraged future marine engineers to develop the skills necessary to thrive in the maritime industry of tomorrow.

This special event was organized by the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science & Technology (IMarEST), further strengthening the link between academia and industry. Undergraduates and students from Ocean university Sri Lanka, Institute of Engineering Technology, Katunayake, Institute of Technology University of Moratuwa | ITUM, and CINEC were participated along with their lecturers to the event. 

Representing the Department of Marine Engineering, Cdr PMKC Chandimal (Head of Department), LCdr (E) Chathumal Chandrasiri (Lecturer), and five undergraduates actively participated, gaining valuable insights into the challenges and opportunities shaping the future of marine engineering.

The department extends its sincere appreciation to IMarEST and Capt. Lakmal for providing this opportunity to broaden knowledge and inspire the next generation of marine engineers.
