Society Introduction

Civil Engineering Society of General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University (CES-KDU) was established in 2017, under the guidance of former Dean, Dr. WCDK Fernando and former Head, Department of Civil Engineering, Dr. TMWRMB Samarakoon with the students of Intake 31.  
Since then it has been adding vivid experiences to the student life and a greater platform for the undergraduates by organizing guest lectures, workshops, competitions, social outreach activities, industrial day and exhibitions with the blessings of the university. These activities increase creativity and soft skills of the students and facilitates the development of a Civil Engineer responsible to the society.

Currently the 7th CES-KDU is functioning with the fullest cooperation of the undergraduates of the Department, guided by its advisors, Dean, Faculty of Engineering, Prof. Thushara Weerawardane, Head, Department of Civil Engineering, Dr. Ishani Dias, and Dr. Shayani Mendis, Senior Lecturer, with timely advises of all academic staff of the department.

Membership

Any student enrolled in the programme BSc in Engineering, specializing in Civil Engineering at KDU are eligible for membership of the society. An eligible can become a member by going through an application process.

Executive Committee

The Executive Committee is elected at the Annual General Meeting of the Society at the start of each academic year and serves a one-year term.

Events Organized

Year 2022

A webinar on ‘Approaches for Management of Storm Water’ was conducted by Eng Dhanesh Gunathillake on 15th June 2022 at FOE 4-2 with the presence of civil engineering undergraduates and the staff of civil engineering department.

A webinar on ‘Managing risks & Uncertainties in Engineering Projects’ was organized by CES on 8th September 2022. The webinar was conducted by Prof. Janaka Ruwanpura.

An open workshop was conducted on 20th October 2022 to aware the undergraduuates about the spagheeti bridge competition and to give the basic knowledge in bridge engineering.

A webinar on ‘Development of a lake model using globally available data: Case study of Lake Turkana, Kenya’ was organized by CES on 3rd November 2022. The seminar was conducted by Ms Charuni Wickramarachchi

Under the Athwela project the buildings of Pahala Madampella School, Gampaha were renovated, and a leadership program was organized for the students of the school. Also, a workshop was conducted for O/L students of the school.

Year 2021

Introductory session on the “CONNECT” State Bridge Design Competition which was organized by the State Ministry of Rural Roads and other Infrastructures was held on 22nd February 2021 via Zoom for undergraduates of the Department of Civil Engineering of General Sir John Kotelawala Defense University. This session was organized by the Civil Engineering Society together with the Student Chapter of the Highway Engineering Society (HES) of General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University. The session was conducted by Eng. Kusal Rathnayake who is the coordinator of the CONNECT Bridge Competition.

The CES and HES collaborated together in organizing an enlightenment session prior to the commencement of Industrial Training of Intake 35 Civil Engineering students. This Industrial Awareness Program was conducted by Intake 34 students, and it was held on 13th June 2021 via zoom technology. They were given information and previous site experiences were shared with respect to the following areas.

  • Substructure work
  • Reinforcement
  • Formwork
  • Reading structural and architectural drawings
  • Site discipline
A webinar on “Challenges on High Rise Building Construction Shangri-La Mixed Development Project” organized by Civil Engineering Society was held on the 3rd of September 2021 via zoom technology. The webinar was conducted by Eng. Udayanga Alwis, who is a pioneer in Structural Engineering.
A webinar on “Bridging the Gap-University to work” organized by Civil Engineering Society (CES) was held on the 19th of November 2021 via zoom technology. The keynote speaker was Ahilan Selladurai, who is the Senior Structural Engineer at California Department of Water Resources, USA.
The webinar organized by Civil Engineering Society (CES) on “Real World Applications of Finite Element Method” was held on the 21st of January 2022 via zoom technology. This session was conducted by Eng. Shiromal Fernando, who is one of the best structural engineers in Sri Lanka

“Athwela 2021” is an outreach project organized by the Civil Engineering Society of KDU to provide aid for the Ho/Gallappahala Primary School Mahagama, Horana. It is a school of 81 students varying from preschool to Grade 5. Main objective of this project was to renovate the washroom facility and to provide school stationary packs needed for their education. This outreach project was successfully conducted on 15th of February 2022 with the participation of the KDU staff Members and few students of intake 35. All donations including financial and stationary items were collected from KDU students, KDU staff members and other volunteers. A pack of school items containing a lunch box, pencil case, books, water bottle, pens, pencils, eraser, sharper and pastel box. Sports items, A3, A4 bundles, Globe, masks, sanitizers and other necessary items were also given for the welfare of the school administration. An entertainment program was conducted for the students to add more colors to the event.

Year 2018

Workshop on “How to make Spaghetti Bridges” conducted by Eng. Lt. (CE) RMKS Karunarathne was held on 28th February 2018 at 2.30 p.m. at Faculty of Engineering. The objective of this workshop was to give knowledge and experience in construction of spaghetti bridges to participate in competitions. Also, students were able to gain knowledge about types of bridges, load transfer mechanisms from this workshop. Civil Engineering students from intakes 32, 33, 34 participated for the event.

Spaghetti Bridge Competition 2018 organized by CES-KDU was held on 04th and 05th of April at Faculty of Engineering. The competition was organized as an intra university competition and 7 teams were competed.

Construction of bridges were done in the 1st day of the competition and competitors were given a period of 5 hours to complete the task. Evaluation and prize giving of the competition was held in the 2nd day. Evaluation of the bridges were done by the judges Dr. NK Gunasekara, Dr. Thanuja Kulathunga, Mr. Pubudu Damsara and Miss Nadeesha Abeysinghe. Out of the 7 groups, 1st ,2nd and 3rd places were selected. Then the prize giving was held with the participation of honourable chief guest Deputy Vice Chancellor Defence and Administration Maj. Gen. IP Ranasinghe RWP RSP ndu psc, Dean of faculty of the Defence and Strategic Studies Col. WTWG Ihalage RWP RSP psc, Dean of the faculty of Engineering Dr. WCDK Fernando, Head of Department of Electrical, Electronic and Telecommunication Engineering Capt. JU Gunaseela USP psc, Head of Department of Civil Engineering Dr. NK Gunasekara, other senior lecturers and instructors.

A guest lecture on “Bridge Design” organized by CES-KDU was held on the 12 th of July 2018 at Faculty of Engineering. The lecture was conducted by Eng. Yasela Sumanasighe Charted Structural and Bridge Engineer.

In this lecture, bridge designing procedures and concepts as well as construction techniques were discussed. The lecture was held with the presence of Dr. NK Gunasekara, Dr. DDTK Kulathunga and Eng. B.H.J. Pushpakumara. Civil Engineering students from intakes 32 and 34 were participated for the evet.

Open Day 2018 organized by KDU was held in 08th of September 2018 at KDU premises. In this event, Department of Civil Engineering arranged an exhibition of models of structures in structural, highway, hydraulic and environmental fields, practical presentation in surveying, soil mechanics, hydraulics and environmental engineering and a quiz competition
“Athwela 2018” is an outreach project was organized by the Civil Engineering Society of KDU to provide aid for the Mugunumulla KV, Kotapola, Matara. Main objective of this project was to give financial assistance needed to increase the standard of the classrooms of the school by providing the classrooms with partitions required. The financial assistance was provided for this purpose with the supervision of the divisional educational office in the area as well. Furthermore, the students were donated with stationary needed for their education. This outreach project was held on the 18th of October 2018 with the participation of students and members of the department.
All donations including financial and stationary items were collected from KDU students, KDU staff members and other volunteers. A talent show also had been organized by the students of Mugunumulla KV on that day to add more colour to the event.
