Eight undergraduates from the 37th Intake of the Faculty of Engineering came together, wanting to provide a thriving community which space enthusiasts could benefit from. This was achieved by laying the groundwork necessary for the formation of a local chapter for the Students for the Exploration and Development of Space of General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University (SEDS KDU).
The local chapter was to operate under the already functional and well recognized SEDS Sri Lanka, home to over twenty other local chapters around the nation. SEDS Sri Lanka is one of a few select other SEDS Nations, operating under the purview of SEDS Earth, founded by five colleagues in MIT in the year 1980. The SEDS KDU Chapter was initiated under the direct supervision of the Department of Aeronautical Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, KDU. The eight co-founders of the 37th Intake went on to form the first Executive Board of SEDS KDU and appointed eight other Divisional Leads from the 38th Intake for each respective division in which SEDS KDU was to operate.
