The final year research project “Development of a Low Cost AUV for Underwater Application in Shallow Water Environment” developed by undergraduates of Intake 30, Department of Marine Engineering, General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University was awarded the 3rd place in National Level under the “University and Tertiary Educational Institutes” Category. The event was organized by Sri Lanka Inventors Commission operative under the purview of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Research held on 26th October 2017 at BMICH.
The undergraduates of the Department of Marine Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, KDU had participated in a highly challenging and competitive national level competition in the field of Engineering. The team had developed an “Autonomous Underwater Vehicle” which is a robotic vessel that is manoeuvrable in three dimensions and moves through the water with the aid of a propulsion system, controlled and piloted by an on-board computer. The vehicle should ideally follow a precise preprogramed trajectory wherever and whenever required under varying environmental conditions.
The team consisted of SLt(E) RA Singalaxana, SLt(E) HMNC Hearth, SLt(E) PMS Senarath, SLt(E) TAMIM Bandara, SLt(E) YM Samarasingha, Lt(E) NN Rajapaksha and the team was supervised by Mr. SAT Randeni Pathiranachchilage who is well skilled in this field. Currently he is reading for his PhD at Australian Maritime Collage.
