Student Chapter of Royal aeronautical Society at KDU

The Royal Aeronautical Society (RAeS), United Kingdom is one of the premier professional societies for Aeronautical Engineering which is functioning since 1866. Being one of the Corporate Partners of the RAeS since 2014, KDU acquired certain privileges for both academic staff members and undergraduate students of the Department of Aeronautical Engineering. Further, we could establish the Student Chapter of RAeS at KDU in 2018. The student chapter facilitates to acquaint students with topics related to Aeronautical and Aerospace Engineering through guest lectures, workshops, and educational tours. The objective of this student chapter is to promote aviation by fostering the close association of students with the Aeronautical Engineering professionals and the Royal Aeronautical Society.

Webinar on “Sustainability, Aviation and Covid – 19 ”

The Student Chapter of the Royal Aeronautical Society at KDU with the patron of the Department of Aeronautical Engineering organized a webinar on “Sustainability, Aviation and Covid-19” on 26th June 2021 from 1000 hrs to 1115 hrs through online mode. The resource person was Mr. Dhanushka de Silva, who is currently serving as the Environment Compliance and Planning Manager at SriLankan Airlines Ltd. The webinar was successfully completed with the online participation of academic staff members and the undergraduates of the department.

Webinar on “Aerospace Engineering Outlook

The Student Chapter of the Royal Aeronautical Society at KDU with the patron of the Department of Aeronautical Engineering organized a webinar on “Aerospace Engineering Outlook” on 29th January 2021 from 1530 hrs to 1700 hrs. The resource person was Mr. Geethaka Fernando, Head of IT performance and governance at Rolls Royce plc, United Kingdom.

 Guest Lecture on “Achieving Safety and Reliability of Aircraft / Aero Engines ”

The Student Chapter of the Royal Aeronautical Society at KDU with the patron of the Department of Aeronautical Engineering organized a guest lecture on “Achieving Safety and Reliability of Aircraft / Aero Engines” on 27th June 2019 from 1400 hrs to 1615 hrs at the mini auditorium of the university. The resource person was Dr. Keerthi Devendra, Director – KD Engineering Consultancy Ltd (UK) and former Chief of Sub- Systems at Rolls Royce pls, United Kingdom.

Guest Lecture on “A Journey through Aeronautics, Astrophysics, and Space Exploration ”

The Student Chapter of the Royal Aeronautical Society at KDU with the patron of the Department of Aeronautical Engineering organized a guest lecture on “A Journey through Aeronautics, Astrophysics, and Space Exploration” on 04th June 2019 from 1615 hrs to 1715 hrs at the mini auditorium of the university. The resource person was Dr. Nalin Samarasinha, Senior Scientist at Planetary Science Institute, USA, who visited to the university for the consecutive year after 2018

Appointing of New Office Bearers of the Student Chapter of the Royal Aeronautical Society at KDU for 2019-2020

The new office bearers were taking over the duties of the Student Chapter of the Royal Aeronautical Society at KDU for 2019-2020 on 16th May 2019 during the Student Chapter meeting which was held with the presence of Chief Academic Advisor, Academic Advisors and all the Student Chapter members. The office bearer positions were handed over by the Office bearers of Intake 33 to the Office bearers of Intake 34. The former President of the Student Chapter Mr. H. D. K. Paranavithana, former Secretary of the Student Chapter Mr. M. A. T. Chandima and former Assistant Secretary Ms. K.K.S.P. Upasena shared their experiences in the gathering and they handed over the duties to the new office bearers.

Officer Cadet Sushil Khadka took over the duties as the President of the Student Chapter, while Officer Cadet GRKS Somarathna and Lady Officer Cadet KG Wanniarachchi appreciated as the Vice- President and the Secretary respectively. The Day Scholar Mr. N. P. Liyanage assigned as the Assistant Secretary of the Student Chapter for the year 2019-2020.

The newly appointed President of the Society Officer Cadet Sushil Khadka also addressed the gathering. He stated that he is looking forward to bring the Student Chapter to the next level with the support of the other office bearers and also with all the representatives of the Student Chapter under the advice of the Chief Academic Advisor and other academic staff of the Student Chapter. Mr. Dakshina Fernando an academic staff member of the department also witnessed this event.

The Chief Academic Advisor of the Student Chapter, the Head of the Department of Aeronautical Engineering Group Captain CJ Hettiarachchi extended his wishes to the newly appointed office bearers while appreciating the work done by the former office bearers

The Inaugural Guest Lecture organized by the Student Chapter of the Royal Aeronautical Society of KDU

The Student Chapter of the Royal Aeronautical Society of KDU with the patron of the Department of Aeronautical Engineering was organized its inaugural guest lecture on 28th February 2019 from 1430 hrs to 1530 hrs at the Mini Auditorium of the university. The Chief Academic Advisor of the Student Chapter of the Royal Aeronautical Society at KDU and also the Head of the Department in Aeronautical Engineering, Group Captain CJ Hettiarachchi delivered the welcome speech.

The guest lecturer was Mr. Sudila Welikala, a Senior Engineers at SriLankan Airlines, delivered his lecture related to “Aircraft Maintenance Engineering”.

The event was successfully ended up after handing over the tokens of appreciations by the Dean, Faculty of Management, Social Sciences and Humanities, Dr. Namali Sirisoma and the vote of thanks was delivered by the Vice-President of the Student Chapter of the Royal Aeronautical Society at KDU, Officer Cadet GRKS Somarathna of Intake 34.

The Department of Aeronautical Engineering at the General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University proudly announce formation of Student Chapter of the Royal Aeronautical Society under the patron of the Department of Aeronautical Engineering.
The first meeting of the Chapter was held on 24th January 2019 at the departmental premises with the participation of Academic staff and the undergraduates of the department of Aeronautical Engineering.
