The IEEE Power and Energy Society (PES) Student Branch Chapter of General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University (KDU) proudly launched its inaugural CSR project, Sip Sathara, “Sihina dakinnata pannarayak” on November 1, 2024. Designed to enrich the educational experiences of underprivileged students in rural areas, this project was held at Maniyangama Maha Vidyalaya in Avissawella, with participating students from Pannila Weerasinghe Maha Vidyalaya, Panawala Ranjan Wijerathne Maha Vidyalaya, and Welangalla Kanishta Vidyalaya.

Stage 1: Renovation and Infrastructure Upgrades of Pannila Weerasinghe Maha Vidyalaya

The first phase of Sip Sathara was dedicated to essential upgrades at Pannila Weerasinghe Maha Vidyalaya. With the valued support of Phoenix Solar Solutions Pvt Ltd, IEEE PES KDU undergraduates renovated the school’s computer lab, upgrading four existing computers and donating two additional units, creating an inviting and fully functional learning space. This effort was complemented by a comprehensive electrical wiring renovation throughout the school, ensuring both improved safety and reliability. This foundational work laid the groundwork for a more secure and technologically supportive environment, equipping students with the resources to thrive.

Fundraising Drama: Kodewwa

To fund Sip Sathara, the IEEE PES KDU organized Kodewwa, a Sinhalese adaptation of Romeo and Juliet, performed on October 28, 2024, at KDU’s very own Faculty of Graduate Studies Auditorium. This event was particularly historic, marking the first-ever stage drama held on KDU’s campus and aligning with the 44th death anniversary of Sir John Kotelawala, lending an extra layer of significance to the occasion. Directed by renowned theater artist Jayanath Bandara, Kodewwa captivated audiences with a fresh, local adaptation of Shakespeare’s classic love story, blending Sri Lankan culture with humor and drama. The play featured two showings, at 3:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m., and drew an enthusiastic crowd, including the Vice-Chancellor of KDU, who attended as the Chief Guest. Special thanks go to the entire drama team for their hard work and dedication in bringing this unique performance to life, which not only celebrated KDU’s heritage but also contributed to the success of Sip Sathara in supporting educational advancement for students in need

Stage 2: Sip Sathara

The main event commenced on November 1, 2024, with IEEE PES KDU undergraduates conducting engaging, hands-on sessions designed to support students' academic needs. For Grade 11 students preparing for the GCE Ordinary Level examination, the focus was on foundational Electrical Circuits and Electronics, with a practical session that covered essential experiments on electronics and included a demonstration of household wiring using an electrical installation board. Meanwhile, younger students in Grades 6 through 8 explored an introductory Microcontrollers and Programming session, where undergraduates demonstrated Arduino basics through interactive projects, sparking curiosity and interest in technology. To keep the day lively, both groups participated in an educational game on Blooket, where students answered questions through fun, competitive rounds. The top performers in each group received special prizes in recognition of their effort and enthusiasm. In a gesture to support these schools' learning environments, IEEE PES KDU undergraduates presented each participating school with a bundle of books for their library and electronic kits to foster hands-on learning. The day concluded with a heartwarming music session, led by the Art Circle from KDU's Faculty of Engineering, bringing smiles to students and volunteers alike.

This impactful initiative was made possible through the dedication of Head of Department, Capt (L) RT Hettiarachchi USP, Programme coordinator, LCdr (L) MRRA Bandara, IEEE PES KDU Advisor, Eng (Ms.) RMDSD Ranasinghe, academic staff, non-academic staff, undergraduates of 38, 39, 40 & 41 of Electrical, Electronic & Telecommunication Engineering. Sip Sathara stands as a testament to the power of collaboration and the commitment of KDU department staff and students to make a difference.
